    Don’t forget that as you use up things in your freezer(s) to fill that empty space with frozen water. I buy my milk in cartons, not jugs, and so I just fill them when empty and freeze that. One, makes your freezers run more efficiently and two in a power outage, things will stay frozen longer.

    During that time (D/FW area) I brought my 6 potted citrus trees in the house to save them - we lost power and the inside of our house dropped to 28. We left and went to my daughter’s house who still had power when the inside of the house dipped to 45. We had already cracked all faucets to run a little and when we came back the next morning we had ice waterfalls in all sinks and the showers. As to mice, you could make shelving big enough to hold your totes etc and “cage” them with 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch hardware cloth

    I don't get the dont try thing. Slavery was rampant and the status quo once. Minds weren't easily changed about it. Should we not have fought against it? Should we have kept our mouths shut about it? Nothing would have changed then.

    I’m a newbie in the freshly ground wheat scene. I’ve just purchased a grain mill and wheat berries and tried my very first bread recipe in the bread machine. It didn’t rise perfectly but it was totally edible and tasty. I just need more practice. But…I don’t understand the winter/spring differences. I have hard red wheat and soft white wheat. So what is red SPRING wheat?

    If you soak your grain overnight, and then dry and grind, you reduce the antinutrients and make it more digestable and the nutrients more accessible.

    I missed the livestream. Lots of important information. What I am so grateful for is my outside grill/wood stove my husband adapted for me to be able to cook things such as beans and stews as well as regular meats in the grill side (he knows a bit of welding). With this weather (CA) it’s a blessing to cook those outside to not overheat our home and you also get to practice starting a fire🔥 😅 you don’t have to spend hundreds, just use what you already have and your knowledge to adapt things in your favor! Hope it makes sense 😊

    My family moved to southwest Missouri when I was a teenager. I'm now 74 and I still watch what I say - politically, about religion & any other thing that might just smack of being a liberal. That's the main reason we moved to the country. We don't like to argue or be angry about things we have very little control over. Sadly that's what we run into if we do say anything. We rarely (Dr., groceries, occasionally out to eat) go out these days. We have a few close friends who shares our values that socialize with but even those are more spaced out than it used to be. I have been stocking up for about a year now. About all we need now is more dog food to stash and batteries. There are so many things going on, not just in the U.S. but around the world also. I've found the only way we can stay sane in these crazy days are to play music, sit out on our front porch, watch the leaves of the trees that surround us dance in the breeze and find the humor in anything we can. I do have one suggestion, smile. Smiling at strangers helps relieve anger & tension and makes us feel happier. Sounds too simple but I've found it always works for me. Thank you, especially when you've said things we feel! You're not alone, there are probably more of us it's just that we aren't as angry or violent and don't want to be.

    I've just made this for the second time. I split the recipe up to make two batches, one with corn whiskey and one with Cruzan spiced rum. So, 1/2 gal. juice, a fifth of booze, 1/2 gal. of cider, and 1 1/3 cup of brown sugar in each pot. Turned out beautifully. Every version of Phil's recipe rules! It's not only got good kick, it has more apple flavor than a lot of recipes I've tried, including the one where I put sliced raw apples directly into booze. I'd say this recipe has a narrower flavor profile than most, but all the flavors are good and in ideal proportion, so it works out. There's no extraneous BS in it. I also like that the apple juice comes through and doesn't get smothered like it does in other recipes. I've also had success enhancing recipes like this using nutmeg, pecan, and lemon. In the case of the lemon, I make a maceration, by putting a few mashed-up lemon gummies into strong booze. The booze absorbs the bitterness of the lemon only - none of the sugar. It's strong and harsh! But, when added as an ingredient to a recipe like apple pie or pecan booze, it's pretty fantastic.

    • @mossjar
      @mossjar 16 годин тому

      Oh yes, I should mention that I used Black Forest brand lemon gummies. They have liquid inside. But, I think any gummy candy which a person likes to eat should also work for them in booze. If you don't crush the liquid-filled ones, they're even more bitter! I use 1 gummy per ounce of booze to steep in.
